Sky-High Employment Rate in Israel Indicates Healthy Job Market

By Arye Green/TPS • 1 August, 2019

A new report published by Israel’s Ministry of Labor showed the employment rate for ages 25-46 in Israel to be at 78.3%, ahead of the 73.7% average of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The unemployment rate fluctuated a little and is now at 4%. This rate is considered healthy as it is comprised mostly of people who are on brief breaks between jobs, and very few people who are unemployed for a long term period.

The Israeli labor force is exceptionally diverse, and different sectors of society have very different employment characteristics. Two sectors in which employment has historically been relatively low are Arab women and Ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) men.

The report measured that the employment rate for Arab women was at 38.2%, and 50.2% for Haredi men. The employment in both sectors has improved significantly over the past decade; however, the improvement seems to have recently stagnated for Haredi men.

The report also analyzes the job market in Israel and attempts to project the trends for different professions in the coming years.

One trend, enabled partly by improving technology and partly through changes in regulation, is the rise in freelance workers. The rate of freelance workers has steadily increased for the past three decades and was measured at 7.9% for 2017.

The report looked into the demand for different professions over time. The high-tech professions have seen the biggest spikes in demand in the past five years. For instance, computer programmers have seen a 40% increase in employment, the number of electrical engineers grew by 48%, and 33% more machine technicians and engineers have joined the workforce.

On the other hand, demand for some professions has been in sharp decline. 10% of Office clerks have left the profession in the past five years. Telephone sales representatives have declined by 15%, professional typists by 13% and gas station employees by 17%.

These trends are a worldwide phenomenon and mostly stem from changes in technology. Governments have mostly been unsuccessful in their attempts to revive professions in decline, and economists suggest the efforts should focus on professional training and education that can better prepare people for the ever-changing job market.

U.S. Officials: New North Korean Projectile Launch Detected

Thursday, August 1, 2019 at 5:18 pm

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – North Korea appears to have carried out a new projectile launch, two U.S. officials said on Thursday, adding that initial information indicated it was similar to previous tests carried out by Pyongyang.

One of the officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the launch did not pose a threat to North America. The official said it was unclear how many projectiles had been launched.

North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles early on Wednesday, only days after it launched two similar missiles on July 25.

President Trump played down the launches when asked about them at the White House just after news broke about the latest projectile launch. He told reporters he was not worried at they were short-range and “very standard.”

Earlier on Thursday and before the latest launch, a senior U.S. official said North Korea’s latest missile launches did not violate a pledge that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made to Trump not to test long-range missiles and nuclear weapons.

The two leaders agreed at a June 30 meeting to revive stalled denuclearization talks, but efforts to resume the negotiations remain in doubt. Diplomats have crisscrossed the region this week in the hope of restarting the talks.

The North Korea launches have appeared intended to put pressure on South Korea and the United States to stop planned military exercises and offer other concessions, analysts said.

A summit between Trump and Kim in Vietnam in February collapsed after the two sides failed to reconcile differences between U.S. demands for North Korea’s complete denuclearization and North Korean demands for sanctions relief.

First Half Of 2019 Sees Record-High Numbers Of Antisemitism In Uk

Board of Deputies: Report shows 46% rise in incidents of antisemitism on social media; over 100 were related to alleged antisemitism within the Labour Party.

BY ILANIT CHERNICK  AUGUST 1, 2019 21:05

A report on UK antisemitism in the first six months of 2019 has revealed a record-high number of incidents in the country.

According to the Community Security Trust, which monitors antisemitism and provides security for British Jewry, 892 antisemitic incidents were recorded nationwide.

This is the third year in a row that the organization has seen an increase in antisemitic incidents.

The group said that this was a 10% increase in antisemitic incidents over the same period last year. In 2018, 810 incidents were reported between January and June.

“CST recorded over 100 antisemitic incidents in every one of the six months from January to June 2019, the third consecutive year in which this has occurred,” it said. “The highest monthly totals in the first half of 2019 were February and March, with 182 and 169 antisemitic incidents respectively. These are the joint fourth and sixth highest monthly totals ever recorded by CST.”

The trust highlighted that these incidents occurred “when issues relating to Jews and antisemitism were prominent in news and politics, due to the continuing controversy over antisemitism in the Labour Party.”

In February, a small group of Labour MPs left the party, with several saying that antisemitism was the main reason for their decision.

“CST recorded 25 antisemitic incidents in February and 30 in March that were examples of, or related to arguments over, alleged antisemitism in the Labour Party,” the organization stated. “These 55 Labour Party-related incidents from February and March are over half of the 100 such incidents recorded by CST during the first six months of 2019.”

Of the 892 incidents of antisemitism recorded, 323 were related to social media, comprising 36% of the overall total.

This is compared to 221 incidents on social media in the first half of 2018, or 27% of the total.

This means that there was a 46% increase in the number of online incidents recorded by CST compared to 2018.

“It is the most obvious single factor explaining why the overall total rose by 10% in the first half of the year,” CST explained. “It is difficult to assess whether this reflects an increase in the amount of antisemitism online, or more reporting of the phenomenon to CST.”

The group also reported a 37% increase in the number of violent antisemitic attacks.

During the first six months of 2018, 62 violent incidents were reported, but in the first half on 2019, this number rose to 85.

“None of these violent incidents were classified by CST as ‘Extreme Violence’, which would mean they involved potential grievous bodily harm or a threat to life,” the report said. “There were 38 incidents of Damage and Desecration of Jewish property in the first six months of 2019; 710 incidents of Abusive Behaviour, including verbal abuse, antisemitic graffiti, antisemitic abuse via social media and one-off cases of hate mail; 49 direct antisemitic threats; and ten cases of mass-mailed antisemitic leaflets or emails.”

Almost two thirds of the 892 antisemitic incidents reported were recorded in Greater London and Greater Manchester, the two largest Jewish communities in the UK.

However, the CST noted that there was a slight decrease – 1% – in the number of antisemitic incidents that took place in both cities.

Despite the small decrease in these cities, antisemitic attacks outside Greater London and Greater Manchester are on the up.

“[The] CST recorded an increase in antisemitic incidents outside London and Manchester, from 226 incidents in the first half of 2018 to 316 this year,” it said. “ This included 43 antisemitic incidents in Hertfordshire, 34 in Merseyside, 18 in Gateshead, 15 in Leeds, 12 in Birmingham and 11 in Wales.

Reacting to the report, Board of Deputies of British Jewry president Marie van der Zyl said that “yet again, the CST has recorded the highest-ever number of antisemitic incidents for the first six months of 2019, surpassing last year’s total, which was itself a record.

“The report shows a 46% rise in incidents of anti-Jewish racism on social media and over 100 were specifically related to alleged antisemitism within the Labour Party,” she said “This makes shameful reading for the party’s leadership.”

Lambasting Labour, she stressed that they “must finally take the steps required to rid their party of this appalling racism.

“Defeating the evil of antisemitism will take a concerted effort by the country’s political leadership and civil society to ensure that this country remains a safe and happy place for the Jewish community,“ she concluded.

Commenting on the report, CST chief executive David Delew said that, “the problem is spreading across the country and online; it reflects deepening divisions in our society; and it is causing increasing anxiety in the Jewish community.

“It will take people of all communities and backgrounds standing together to turn this tide of hate around,” he stressed.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hamilton of the UK National Police Chiefs’ Council Lead for Hate Crime, responded to the record-high numbers with concern.

“It can never be acceptable to abuse someone because of their ethnicity or religion, but we see that there are still far too many [people] in our society who are prepared to act illegally, fueled by global events, divisions in our own society or by bigoted ideologies,” he said.

He vowed that the police “will continue to improve our services to victims and to help bring offenders to justice.

“It is always concerning to see indicators of increased hate crime… We will be working with analysts when the national crime data is released in autumn, to establish whether these increases reflect a greater incidence of hate crime or further improvements in reporting levels,” Hamilton added.

NCSY Hatzalah Rescue: Training the next generation of emergency responders

The month-long summer program in Israel throws teens into action, working with paramedics and others to save lives.

(August 1, 2019 / JNS) Sam Blech, 16, and Rivkah Zigman, also 16, both campers on NCSY Hatzalah Rescue, were volunteering as part of their summer program with a United Hatzalah ambulance crew in Tel Aviv. At approximately 7 p.m. on July 16, their ambulance was dispatched to an unresponsive patient in an apartment complex.

NCSY Hatzalah Rescue is a month-long summer program run out of a partnership with the Orthodox Union’s NCSY Summer and United Hatzalah, a volunteer-based emergency medical services organization in Israel. The program includes training teens to serve as Emergency Medical Responders and shifts volunteering with ambulance crews in Israel.

Upon arrival, Blech and Zigman found one of United Hatzalah’s ambucycle responders providing CPR compressions to a 60-year-old female. Zigman immediately applied the AED while Blech took over compressions.

After shocking the patient, Zigman took over compressions while Blech began giving breaths through a BVM device. Working with the EMT teams from United Hatzalah and a paramedic team from Magen David Adom, the patient’s pulse returned, and the paramedics were able to transport the breathing patient with a pulse to the hospital.

Also that day, fellow campers Benjamin Mendelson, 17, and Jaden Jubas, 16, were volunteering with a United Hatzalah ambulance crew in Bat Yam.

Shortly after 2 p.m., their ambulance was dispatched to a call for a semi-responsive patient. While en route, the call was upgraded to a “CPR in progress.”

Upon arrival, the team found multiple United Hatzalah ambucycle responders providing CPR to an 80-year-old male.

Both teens immediately joined the compression rotation, working with EMTs from United Hatzalah and a paramedic team from Magen David Adom, regaining and losing the patient’s pulse twice before it was finally returned, and the paramedics could get the patient to the hospital.

A ceremony later took place where the teens were celebrated for their efforts.

Los Angeles – US Fighter Jet Crashes In Death Valley, 7 Park Visitors Hurt

0

Los Angeles – A U.S. Navy fighter jet crashed Wednesday in Death Valley National Park, injuring seven people who were at a scenic overlook where aviation enthusiasts routinely watch military pilots speeding low through a chasm dubbed Star Wars Canyon, officials said.

The crash sent dark smoke billowing in the air, said Aaron Cassell, who was working at his family’s Panamint Springs Resort about 10 miles (16 kilometers) away and was the first to report the crash to park dispatch.

“I just saw a black mushroom cloud go up,” Cassell told The Associated Press. “Typically you don’t see a mushroom cloud in the desert.”

A search was underway for the pilot of the single-seat F/A-18 Super Hornet that was on a routine training mission, said Lt. Cmdr. Lydia Bock, spokeswoman for Naval Air Station Lemoore in California’s Central Valley.

“The status of the pilot is unknown at this time,” Bock said about four hours after the crash.

A military helicopter searched for the pilot.

Ambulances were sent to the crash site near Father Crowley Overlook, but it wasn’t clear if anyone was transported for further medical treatment, said park spokesman Patrick Taylor. He said initial reports were that seven park visitors had minor injuries.

The lookout point about 160 miles (257 kilometers) north of Los Angeles is popular with photographers and aviation buffs who gawk at jets flying in the steep, narrow canyon.

U.S. and foreign militaries train pilots and test jets in the gorge officially called Rainbow Canyon near the park’s western entrance. Military flights there date back to World War II.

The chasm got its nickname because mineral-rich soil and red, gray and pink walls bring to mind the home planet of “Star Wars” character Luke Skywalker.

Training flights are almost a daily feature with jets thundering below the rim of the canyon and passing so close viewers can see the pilots’ facial expressions.

Cassell said he heard jets roaring through the area and then saw the cloud of smoke.

“It looked like a bomb,” Cassell said. “To me that speaks of a very violent impact.”

A jet that was following the downed craft pulled up and began circling, Cassell said. He didn’t see any parachute.

His father drove up to the area after the crash and saw a large black scorch mark and shattered parts of the jet scattered throughout the area between the parking lot and lookout, Cassell said. A nose cone from the jet was the size of a bowling ball and the rest of the debris was no larger than a ball cap.

The jet was from strike fighter squadron VFA-151 stationed at Lemoore. The squadron is part of an air group attached to the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis.

The Super Hornet is a twin-engine warplane designed to fly from either aircraft carriers or ground bases on both air-superiority and ground-attack missions.

Amazon drivers part of $10 million theft ring, FBI says

A theft ring in Washington state sold millions of dollars’ worth of stolen goods on Amazon.com in the past six years, recently unsealed federal court documents show.

Aug. 1, 2019, 4:50 PM EDT By Associated Press

SEATTLE — A theft ring in Washington state sold millions of dollars’ worth of stolen goods on Amazon.com in the past six years, and a pair of Amazon delivery drivers was involved, recently unsealed federal court documents show.

According to a search warrant affidavit unsealed in U.S. District Court in Seattle and reviewed by The Associated Press, two storefront businesses posing as pawnshops bought the goods from shoplifters, then had the items shipped to Amazon warehouses, where they were stored until sold online.

Entities associated with the alleged ringleader did at least $10 million in sales on Amazon since 2013, FBI agent Ariana Kroshinsky wrote in her affidavit.

No charges have yet been filed, though investigators have raided the pawnshops and the home of the man identified as the ringleader, Aleksandr Pavlovskiy, 44, of Auburn. A man who answered the door at one of the shops Wednesday identified himself as Alex and told The Associated Press his business was legitimate, that he kept good records and he should not be in any trouble.

Among those who provided stolen items to the pawn shops were two contract Amazon drivers, Kroshinsky said. Their job was to travel to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, pick up items being returned to the company and then bring them to an Amazon warehouse south of Seattle, and to deliver items to post offices for shipping. Instead, they routinely stole the goods and sold them to the pawnshops, she wrote.

Amazon did not immediately return an email seeking comment about the case Thursday.

The investigation began last summer when a police detective in Auburn, a south Seattle suburb, was perusing a record of pawnshop sales and noticed that one man had made 57 transactions. It turned out to be one of the drivers.

He had received nearly $30,000 selling items to the pawn shops between February and July last year, the affidavit said. Police initially arrested the driver, but released him from jail to avoid disrupting their larger investigation.

The other driver, identified as Abbas Zghair, was believed to be a roommate of the first. Amazon told investigators that Zghair stole about $100,000 worth of property, including gaming systems, sporting goods and computer products — items he sold to one of the pawnshops for less than $20,000, the agent wrote.

In an unrelated case, Zghair has been charged with murder after police said he shot and killed a man in an Auburn field in March, then fled to the Canadian border, where he was arrested trying to cross with a fake ID. He’s being held on $2.5 million bail.

Detectives staked out the pawnshops, Innovation Best in Kent and Thrift-Electro in Renton, and observed that they appeared to be paying shoplifters and drug users cash for new items from Home Depot, Lowes and Fred Meyer department stores. Unlike typical pawn shops, they didn’t make sales; instead, the products were moved to a warehouse and to Amazon “fulfillment centers,” from where they were shipped when they were sold on Amazon’s website by sellers using the handles “Bestforyouall” or “Freeshipforyou,” the affidavit said.

According to a database of pawnshop transactions reviewed by Auburn police, the suspect pawn shops paid more than $4.1 million to sellers who brought them nearly 48,000 items in the past six years. The items included allergy medication, razors, electric toothbrushes and tools in their original packaging. Detectives also conducted undercover operations in which they sold new items in their original packaging to the shops, which accepted them no questions asked, Kroshinsky wrote.

The FBI said it is awaiting more Amazon records to determine the full extent of Pavlovskiy’s enterprise, but that “estimated revenue from Amazon sales, for entities associated with Aleksandr Pavlovskiy, was at least $10 million since 2013.”

Pavlovskiy’s lawyer, Cristine Beckwith, did not return a message seeking comment.

The sale of stolen or counterfeit goods on Amazon or other digital marketplaces is not uncommon, but it was not immediately clear how many other schemes had reached such a volume of sales. Last year, police raided a pawn shop in Monroe, north of Seattle, that they said had taken in $428,000 fencing stolen items, much of it on Amazon.

Jon Riley, a vice president for the digital strategy firm Publicis Sapient and previously the head of e-commerce user experience for Amazon Devices, said preventing the sale of stolen goods is a major challenge for the company, but retailers can be held liable if they don’t do enough to ensure they’re not selling stolen goods. Because it’s impossible for Amazon to review “every Tide pod” that’s sold on its site, the company will likely need to do more to vet sellers, Riley said.

“It’s a little bit of an arms race for Amazon to be able to take in product, put it on the web and get it to their customers in a speedy fashion and not unwittingly sell stolen stuff at the same time,” Riley said. “Ultimately what Amazon has to do is show good faith if the government comes knocking on the door and says, ‘Look, you’re selling stolen goods.'”

Alleged Capital One Hacker Barely Bothered To Hide

0

August 1, 2019 8:34 am

The 33-year-old former Amazon software engineer accused of hacking Capital One made little attempt to hide her attack. In fact, she effectively publicized it.

It’s one of many riddles swirling around Paige Thompson, who goes by the online handle “erratic.” Well-known in Seattle’s hacker community, Thompson has lived a life of tumult, with frequent job changes, reported estrangement from family and self-described emotional problems and drug use.

FBI agents arrested Thompson Monday for allegedly obtaining personal information from more than 100 million Capital One credit applications, including roughly 140,000 Social Security numbers and 80,000 bank account numbers. There is no evidence the data was sold or distributed to others.

Thompson, in federal custody pending an Aug. 15 detention hearing, wasn’t reachable. Her public defender, Mohammad Hamoudi, did not return an emailed request for comment.

But her online behavior suggested that she may have been preparing to get caught. More than six weeks before her Monday arrest, Thompson had discussed the Capital One hack online with friends in chats and in a group she created on the Slack messaging service.

Those chats and the recollections of others offer a sketch of someone talented and troubled, grappling with what friends and her own posts indicate was an especially bumpy crossroads in her life.

Friends and associates described Thompson as a skilled programmer and software architect whose career and behavior — oversharing in chat groups, frequent profanity, expressions of gender confusion and emotional ups and downs — mirror her online handle.

“She had a habit of openly struggling with her state of mind in public channels,” said Aife Dunne, an online friend. “It’s where her screen name comes from.”

Prior to working for Amazon, Thompson held six jobs, each for less than a year, at organizations such as ATG Stores, Onvia Inc. and Zion Preparatory Academy. She joined Amazon in 2015 to work at Amazon Web Services, a division that hosted the Capital One data she allegedly accessed illegally beginning in March.

When Thompson departed that job in 2016, she lost her apartment and moved into a group home. FBI agents who searched that house after her arrest also detained the owner, a convicted felon, for illegal possession of firearms when they discovered roughly 20 guns, including assault rifles, on the property.

In a Wednesday court filing, federal authorities also accused Thompson of threatening to “shoot up” a California social media company.

Along the way, Thompson forged friendships online and impressed many with her programming talent. But she had also alienated many local hackers.

She dominated, sometimes monopolized chats on her favorite channel on Internet Relay Chat, a hacker mainstay, and in the Slack group she created. She was also active on Twitter. The Associated Press obtained access to the Slack group, which was deleted Tuesday, and to IRC messages dating back to February 2018.

Thompson openly discussed the hack with friends and associates on several of those channels beginning in mid-June. In April, she created the group “Seattle Warez Kiddies” on the site Meetup — the month after prosecutors say she began hacking Capital One.

Friends told the AP they didn’t believe she had carried out the Capital One hack with malicious intent or for profit.

These people said they believed the unemployed Thompson — destitute and, by her own account, grappling with serious depression — believed the hack could bring her attention, respect and a new job.

“I think she wanted to release all of this responsibly but she didn’t know how to do it,” said Aleyna Vaughan, 36, a friend who said she has texted with Thompson nearly every day for the past two years.

While often endearing online, Thompson could also be alienating and even menacing. Members of Seattle’s “white hat” hacking community said Thompson had sometimes bombarded them with automated emails in what amounted to denial-of-service attacks.

Friends said Thompson was estranged from her mother, with whom she had moved from Arkansas as a child, and that her father had long been out of her life.

Sarah Stensberg said her husband, Kevin, met Thompson in a coding group for young people in the Seattle area and lived with her for a while. Thompson’s abusive behavior eventually led the couple to cut off contact in 2011, she said. Prior to that, they sometimes took Thompson to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center for mental treatment.

“We’d get her into inpatient treatment, we’d visit her, and she’d seem to be doing well,” Stensberg said in an interview Tuesday. “Then she’d go off the deep end. We couldn’t deal with it anymore.”

Thompson repeatedly stalked and harassed them, the couple said, sending them multiple insulting and demeaning messages, until they moved to get away. Then, they allege, she used geolocation tracking from online postings to find their new home. Last fall, the couple obtained protection orders against Thompson, which the AP reviewed along with their petitions.

In the Slack group, Thompson wrote in late June that she was seeing a therapist at least twice a month.

“Never a moment in which my mind can just be free,” she typed, posting a photo of herself in new Armani sunglasses. After noting that she regretted her hacks and harassment of others, she wrote, “it (expletive removed) me off off even more that im not in jail.”

Her Twitter feed also reflected struggles.

“I’m going to go check into the mental hospital for an indefinite amount of time,” she wrote in a public tweet on July 4. “I have a whole list of things that will ensure my involuntary confinement from the world. The kind that they can’t ignore or brush off onto the crisis clinic. I’m never coming back.”

Thompson, who said in chats that she had been transitioning to a woman since age 22 with hormone treatment, wrote on the Slack group that her gender transition might have contributed to her mental anguish. She often discussed her use of legal and illegal drugs online.

The subject of suicide also arose frequently.

“Ive tried to kill myself a few times,” Thompson wrote on IRC on April 19, 2018. “I cant do it.”

WATCH: Jewish-Japanese Boy’s Captivating Life Story Peaks with Win at Wrestling Champion

By Arye Green/TPS • 1 August, 2019

Noah Leibowitz, a 12 year-year-old Jewish boy who lives in Japan, won the All Japan Wrestling Championship (60 KG, Age 12) on Sunday.

The championship brought together 1,400 champion wrestlers from across Japan after they won their regional tournaments.

Noah waited a long time for his matches, as he was a returning champion. When his turn finally arrived, he dominated the arena and didn’t lose any points. He won the first match in 50 seconds, the second in 30, and the final match was won in a brief 13 seconds.

Noah comes from a family of athletes – his brother Levi (17) is currently practicing Judo, as is his sister Mia-Dina (15). They both reside in Israel today, as part of the Na’ale program for Jewish teenagers making Aliyah ahead of their parents. They also both hope to represent Israel in Judo competitions around the world and are attempting to make the national team.

Aside from the athletic aspect, Noah’s family has a fascinating story spanning three continents. His father, David, was born in New York, and his mother, Mayumi Chana, is Japanese-born. They have lived in Japan for most of the last 25 years, and have been back and forth between the US and Japan. In recent years they have frequently visited Israel as well, including a trip to Efrat, where Mayumi Chana converted to Judaism under Rabbi Shlomo Riskin’s auspices.

Japan is a wrestling powerhouse and is among the leading countries in the sport. David, Noah’s father, told TPS that the Japanese style of wrestling is very technical, and focuses mostly on the nuances of delicate movement. This often works to the advantage of the smaller wrestlers. Regarding Noah, his son, David said: “Thank God, Noah is very gifted. He is naturally strong in many respects – physically, emotionally and mentally. His natural strength, combined with the Japanese technical training, created an opportunity for some excellent wrestling.”

Noah has been training for the past eight years and has intensified his training routine in the past three years. He has been regularly training with kids who are older than him, strengthening him and building his confidence.

In a conversation with TPS, Noah spoke about the championship and how it felt to participate: “It was my second tournament, so I wasn’t so stressed the second time around. I had a lot of confidence because I practice with wrestlers who are between one to six years older. I had a lot of pride and confidence going in. I learned how to counter much larger opponents, and that helped a lot.”

Noah believes his experience with older wrestlers will help him later on, as he attempts to win the championship for middle school and high school students.

The Leibowitz family is an example of the strengthening ties between Israel and Japan. They feel that they are part of both cultures and are happy to bridge the gap. “We are very grateful to the Japanese people for all they have done for us and to support Noah. We are thankful for the chance to live in such a lovely country as Japan. The people here are lovely and we have never encountered any anti-Semitism. We are thrilled to be part of the growing bonds between these two ancient nations” said  Leibowitz.

BDS South Africa Deletes Tweet about Ties with PFLP, but Caught by Israeli Org

By Aryeh Savir/TPS • 1 August, 2019

BDS South Africa boasted on Twitter of working with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terror group, but deleted the post shortly after, NGO Monitor reported Thursday.

NGO Monitor, a watchdog monitoring Non-Governmental Organizations operating against Israel, said it was successful in documenting the tweet BDS South Africa attempted to conceal.

“A reprehensive of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) with BDS South Africa’s Muhammed Desai. The PFLP works closely with BDS SA in the global campaign against Apartheid Israel,” a screenshot of the tweet shows, together with a photo of Desai shaking hands with the PFLP member.

Desai is a high ranking official at BDS SA.

The PFLP was designated a terrorist group by the European Union (EU), the US, Canada, and Israel.

The Israeli Ministry of Strategic Affairs’ published a report in February which revealed over 100 different links between terror groups and organizations promoting anti-Israel boycotts, including the employment of 30 active and “retired” terror operatives.

The report, titled “Terrorists in Suits,” exposes links shared between the internationally-designated terrorist organizations Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) with at least 13 anti-Israel BDS promoting NGOs.

The report reveals how Hamas and the PFLP are utilizing a network of NGOs promoting boycotts against Israel as an additional tactic in their ultimate goal of destroying the State of Israel.

These organizations have successfully placed over 30 of their members, 20 of which have served time in prison for acts of terrorism, including for murder, in senior positions within BDS-promoting NGOs.

The report documents how boycott organizations and terrorist groups raise finances together and share the same personnel.

The report also showcases that contrary to popular belief, these officials have not abandoned their support for terrorism, but instead continue to maintain organizational, financial, and active ties with terrorist groups.

NGO Monitor has been tracking the ties between anti-Israel organizations and terror groups since 2016.

In a statement to TPS, an NGO Monitor spokesperson said that “BDS South Africa is only one of many anti-Israel groups that work hand-in-hand with the PFLP and PFLP-linked groups, such as self-styled “human rights” NGOs like Samidoun, Addameer, and Defence for Children International  – Palestine.”

“While these types of NGOs benefit from access to, and funding from, various governments and UN frameworks, there is a growing awareness among funders as to their true, anti-peace face,” he noted.

Danon Congratulates Craft after Senate Approves Her Nomination as US Envoy to UN

By Aryeh Savir/TPS • 1 August, 2019

Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Danny Danon congratulated Kelly Craft and wished her good luck after the US Senate approved her nomination as the US ambassador to the UN.

“Congratulations to Ambassador Kelly Craft on her confirmation to represent the United States at the UN. I look forward to welcoming her to Turtle Bay, and continuing to build upon the great achievements of the United States and Israel,” Danon stated on Wednesday. “We will continue to lead our countries to great heights in the diplomatic arena.”

Craft is replacing Nikki Haley, a staunch supporter of Israel at the UN who left her post and the end of last year.

Speaking at her confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in June, Craft stated that “there will be no stronger ally than Kelly Craft for Israel on behalf of the United States.”

She further noted that “without US leadership, our partners and allies would be vulnerable to bad actors at the UN. This is particularly true in the case of Israel, which is the subject of unrelenting bias and hostility in UN venues.”

The US “will never accept such bias. And if confirmed, I commit to seizing every opportunity to shine a light on this conduct, call it what it is and demand that these outrageous practices finally come to an end,” she pledged.
