Raúl Castro To Step Down As Leader Of Cuba’s Communist Party

0

On Friday, Raúl Castro said he would resign as the leader of Cuba’s Communist Party, signaling a close to more than six decades of Castro family rule.

The Washington Post reports, “Sixty-two years after a band of revolutionaries set Cuba down the path of confrontation with Washington – and unleashed waves of exiles that reshaped American cities – the last of the Castro brothers, towering figures of the Cold War, announced he will surrender official power.”

According to the outlet, “Fidel Castro’s younger brother has hinted for a decade at an expiration date to his public life,” but the 89-year-old “said he would step down as first secretary of the Communist Party.”

Castro made the announcement during a speech on the first day of the Communist Party’s eighth congress. NBC News reported Castro said he had “fulfilled his mission” and was “confident in the future of the fatherland.”

“Nothing, nothing, nothing is forcing me to make this decision,” said Castro. “I believe fervently in the strength and exemplary nature and comprehension of my compatriots, and as long as I live, I will be ready with my foot in the stirrup to defend the homeland, the revolution and socialism with more force than ever.”

Push for postponing Palestinian elections gains momentum on back of Hamas concerns: Report

US is reported warning that Hamas victory could damage, if not bury, prospect of two-state solution

The push for postponing the Palestinian elections is gaining momentum inside the Palestinian Authority (PA), the al-Quds newspaper reported on Friday.

The Palestinian newspaper cited a US source with knowledge on the matter as voicing belief that US President Joe Biden would not object to the prospect.

The source told the paper that Washington was aware of the challenges, including the long-running spat between Fatah, the party dominating the PA, and Gaza-based terrorist group Hamas, as well as economic plights.

The US official also warned that should Hamas, which rejects Israel’s legitimacy, secure prominent positions within the PA, this could damage, if not bury, the prospect of a two-state solution.

The source also said that the internal power struggle within Fatah was likely to chip away at its ability to keep the Gaza terrorists at bay.

On Monday, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad declared that no vote can take place if Palestinians living in East Jerusalem cannot cast their ballots — a pretext that had already been used to defer elections.

Previously, PA President Mahmoud Abbas signed a decree ordering a legislative vote to take place on May 22, while the presidential vote is slated for July.

If it materializes, the election will be the first one to be held by the Palestinians in some 15 years.

Professor Nachman Ash: ‘Indian mutation may be vaccine-resistant’

0

Indian coronavirus mutation has ‘several signs’ that are ‘not good,’ show it may be vaccine-resistant, coronavirus czar Prof. Ash says.

Coronavirus czar Professor Nachman Ash spoke to Israel’s “Meet the Press” program about the coronavirus pandemic and the newly-arrived Indian variant.

When asked if Israel has achieved herd immunity, Prof. Ash responded, “Not yet. We have approximately five million people vaccinated and about a million more recovered. That’s not enough. We need to reach approximately 75% vaccinated and recovered in order to reach herd immunity. But we do see the facts on the ground – the infection rates are low.”

Regarding the Indian mutation, he said: “A few days ago, we identified the mutation among people returning from abroad. Most of them were identified in the airport and went into quarantine, and some were identified during their days of quarantine after arriving in Israel.”

“I hope that there has not been significant exposure other than that, and we are checking all of their contacts. We don’t know much about this mutation, but it has several signs that are not good. We are comparing it, in genetic sequencing, to what we know and it has a few things that show that it might be resistant to the vaccine.”

So far, there has been no mutation that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is not effective against.”In the genetic sequencing libraries globally there are thousands of mutations,” Prof. Ash explained.

“We only look at the mutations which have clinical significance, such as the British and South African mutations, and we suspect that the Indian mutation is very infectious, after we saw how hundreds of thousands of people contracted it quickly in southern India.”

UK’s Prince Philip laid to rest as somber Queen sits alone

The widowed British monarch, setting an example amid the coronavirus pandemic, sat at a distance at the funeral ceremony; people across Britain observed a minute of silence.

As military bands played and a procession of royals escorted his coffin to the church, Prince Philip was laid to rest Saturday in a funeral ceremony that honored his lifetime of service to the UK, the crown and his wife of 73 years, Queen Elizabeth II.

The widowed British monarch, setting an example amid the coronavirus pandemic, sat alone at the ceremony, dressed in black and with her head bowed in prayer.

Following strict social distancing rules during the pandemic, the queen set an example even in grief, sitting apart from family members who were arrayed around the church.

Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, sat opposite the monarch alongside his wife Camilla. Prince Andrew was two seats to the queen’s left. Prince William and his wife Kate sat directly opposite from his brother Prince Harry, who had traveled back from California without his pregnant wife Meghan.

People across Britain observed one minute of silence in honor of Philip just before the funeral got underway. Under soft spring sunshine, some locals earlier stopped outside the castle to leave flowers, but people largely heeded requests by police and the palace not to gather because of the pandemic.

Philip’s coffin traveled to the chapel on a specially adapted Land Rover designed by the prince himself. The coffin was draped in his personal standard and topped with his Royal Navy cap, sword and a wreath of flowers.

For the procession, senior military commanders lined up in front of the vehicle. The children of Philip and the queen — Charles, Princess Anne, Andrew and Prince Edward — walked behind the hearse, while the 94-year-old queen traveled to the chapel in a Bentley car.

Grandsons Prince William and Prince Harry also walked behind the coffin, although not side by side. The brothers, whose relationship has been strained amid Harry’s decision to quit royal duties and move to California, flanked their cousin Peter Phillips, the son of Anne.

For many viewers, the moment stirred memories of William and Harry at 15 and 12, walking behind their mother Princess Diana’s coffin in 1997, accompanied by their grandfather Philip, in a London ceremony televised around the world.

Later the two brothers were seen walking together and chatting Saturday as the mourners left the chapel after the service.

The funeral reflected Philip’s military ties, both as a ceremonial commander of many units and as a veteran of war. More than 700 military personnel took part, including army bands, Royal Marine buglers and an honor guard drawn from across the armed forces.

Inside the Gothic chapel, the setting for centuries of royal weddings and funerals, the service was simple and somber.

The service began with Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby entering the chapel ahead of the coffin, followed by Philip’s children and three of his eight grandchildren, as a four-member, socially distanced choir sang “I am the resurrection and the life.”

There was no sermon, at Philip’s request, and no family eulogies or readings, in keeping with royal tradition. But Dean of Windsor David Conner said the country had been enriched by Philip’s “unwavering loyalty to our queen, by his service to the nation and the Commonwealth, by his courage, fortitude and faith.”

Philip spent almost 14 years in the Royal Navy and saw action in the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific during World War II. Several elements of his funeral had a maritime theme, including the hymn “Eternal Father, Strong to Save,” which is associated with seafarers and asks God: “O hear us when we cry to thee/For those in peril on the sea.”

Leading a prayer, Conner said: “Grant unto him the assurance of thine ancient promise that thou wilt ever be with those who go down to the sea in ships and occupy their business in great waters.”

As Philip’s coffin was lowered into the Royal Vault, Royal Marine buglers sounded “Action Stations,” an alarm that alerts sailors to prepare for battle. Its inclusion, after the traditional bugle call of “The Last Post,” was a personal request from Philip.

Philip was placed in the vault alongside the remains of 24 other royals, including three kings of England. But it will likely not be his permanent resting place. After the queen’s death, she and Philip are expected to be buried in the Royal Burial Ground on the Frogmore Estate close to Windsor Castle.

Along with Philip’s children and grandchildren, the 30 funeral guests included other senior royals and several of his German relatives. Philip was born a prince of Greece and Denmark and, like the queen, is related to a thicket of European royal families.

Ahead of the funeral, Buckingham Palace released a photo of the queen and Philip, smiling and relaxing on blankets in the grass in the Scottish Highlands in 2003. The palace said the casual photo was a favorite of the queen.

For decades, Philip was a fixture of British life, renowned for his founding of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards program that encouraged youths to challenge themselves and for a blunt-spoken manner that at times included downright offensive remarks.

He lived in his wife’s shadow, but his death has sparked a reflection about his role, and new appreciation from many in Britain.

“He was a character, an absolute character,” said Jenny Jeeves as she looked at the floral tributes in Windsor. “He was fun, he was funny. Yes, he made quite a few gaffes, but it depends which way you took it really. Just a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and a good example to all of us.”

Iranian official confirms progress in nuclear talks

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister says “new understanding” appears to
be taking shape in talks regarding US return to 2015 deal.

A senior Iranian official on Saturday offered a upbeat assessment of progress in talks aimed at bringing the United States back into the 2015 nuclear deal, saying that a “new understanding” appears to be taking shape, according to The Associated Press.

Iran has been negotiating with the five powers that remain in the agreement — France, Germany, Britain, Russia and China — in Vienna over the past two weeks. An American delegation also has been in Vienna, but is not talking directly to Iran.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, on Saturday said the talks had entered a new phase, adding that Iran had proposed draft agreements that could be a basis for negotiations.

“We think that the talks have reached a stage where parties are able to begin to work on a joint draft. It seems that a new understanding is taking shape, and now there is agreement over final goals,” he said, according to AP.

”The path is better known, but it will not be easy path,” Araghchi added. “It does not mean that differences of views have come to the end.”

Iran has gradually scaled back its compliance with the 2015 deal in response to former US President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the agreement in May of 2018.

It has continued to do so even as current US President Joe Biden has indicated a desire to return to the deal.

Iranian negotiator Abbas Araghchi announced on Tuesday that Iran would begin enriching uranium to 60% purity, its highest level to date in response to the blackout and explosion which occurred at the Natanz nuclear facility over the weekend.

The move would dramatically shorten Iran’s breakout time to being able to construct a nuclear weapon.

Despite Iran’s announcement on the uranium enrichment, the White House said it remains committed to nuclear negotiations with Iran.

Third Covid-19 vaccine likely necessary, researchers say

0

Researchers are still uncertain as to how long protection against
the virus lasts after full vaccination.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said people will “likely” need a third dose of a Covid-19 vaccine within 12 months of getting fully vaccinated, CNBC reported.

It is also possible they will require an annual vaccination, he said.

His remarks were made over two weeks ago but made public only on Thursday, according to CNBC.

“We need to see what would be the sequence, and for how often we need to do that,,” he told the business news site during an event with CVS Health.

“A likely scenario is that there might be a need for a third dose, somewhere between six and 12 months; and then from there, there will be an annual revaccination, but all of that needs to be confirmed,” he explained. “And again, the variants will play a key role.”

“It is extremely important to suppress the pool of people that can be susceptible to the virus,” Bourla warned.

Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky told CNBC in February that people may need to get vaccinated against Covid-19 annually, just like seasonal flu shots, CNBC noted.

Researchers remain uncertain as to how long protection against the virus lasts once someone has been fully vaccinated.

Earlier this month, CNBC continues, Pfizer said its vaccine was more than 91% effective at protecting against the coronavirus and more than 95% effective against severe disease up to six months after the second dose, basing its data on more than 12,000 vaccinated individuals.

More data is still needed to determine whether protection lasts after six months, the researchers say.

IDF attacks Hamas targets in Gaza

0

Fighter jets and attack helicopters strike weapons manufacturing site, weapon smuggling tunnel and military post in retaliation for rocket fire on Sderot.

IDF fighter jets and attack helicopters struck a Hamas weapons manufacturing site, a weapon smuggling tunnel and a military post in Gaza overnight Thursday, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said.

The air strikes were in retaliation to the rocket fired from Gaza at Israel on Thursday evening.

On Thursday evening, warning sirens were sounded in the western Negev in southern Israel, after a rocket was fired from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip into Israeli territory.

“Following the report on the activation of sirens, one rocket launch was identified from the Strip towards Israeli territory,” an IDF spokesperson said.

The rocket exploded in an open area in near Sderot, with no reports of physical injuries or damage to property.

The previous rocket attack on southern Israel occurred on election day, when a rocket was fired from Gaza toward the southern Israeli city of Be’er Sheva. The rocket exploded in an open area not far from the city and did not cause the Red Color siren to activate.

The rocket attack occurred shortly after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the city during a live broadcast on social media as part of his campaigning on election day.

IDF fighter jets and attack helicopters later struck a Hamas rocket manufacturing site and military post in retaliation for the attack.

Independence Day: Gilad Abrahomov, 16, wins International Bible Quiz

0

As ever, the participants had to contend with the most detailed minutiae from the Bible, answering questions spanning the entire Biblical canon.

The International Bible Quiz for Youth, held every Independence Day, returned to an almost normal format following the corona pandemic this year and was won by Gilad Abrahomov, 16, of Yeshivat Bnei Akiva in Netanya.

In second place was Dvir Barchad, a student at the Kiryat Ata Yeshiva, and in third place Benjamin Rom from the US.

Although this year saw the return of an audience, participants from abroad were still unable to attend in person and had to make do with attending remotely by video link.

As ever, the participants had to contend with the most detailed minutiae from the Bible, answering questions spanning the entire biblical canon from the first Five Books of the Torah, the prophets, and the books of the “Ketuvim,” such as Psalms and Job.

The contestants were peppered with questions such as where did the false prophet Hananya Ben Azor, in the time of King Hezekiah, live? (Givon); how much money did the mother of Micha the prophet give a goldsmith? (200 shekels); and how many years did Jacob spend in the house of Lavan? (20 years).

The 16 participants, who hailed from Israel and around the Jewish world from Argentina to Canada and South Africa to Mexico, dealt admirably with the questions and demonstrated a remarkable grasp of detail of the Hebrew Bible.

The contest was held in the presence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Education Minister Yoav Gallant, and Chairman of the Jewish Agency Isaac Herzog, among other dignitaries.

As he has done on several occasions during the period of national memorial and celebration days, Netanyahu spoke of the vaccination program that has transformed the country since last Independence Day.

“The Prophet Isaiah used the expression ‘Hosen yeshuot’ in which he was referring to the wisdom of the Jewish people and its faith, but today those words have another meaning,” he said.

“Due to the covid vaccination operation we brought salvation from the global pandemic, we have returned to life, and to my joy we have returned to a Bible Quiz in an almost normal format,” adding that he hoped next year international participants would be able to attend in person.

“The Bible is a mighty treasury of spirit, values, identity, love of man, love of the land, faith, and a call for continuity,” he continued. “Every generation is required to add chapters to the amazing story of our people, whose resurrection in the Land of Israel is a wonder among the nations.”

Gallant, whose Education Ministry sponsors the Bible Quiz, also spoke, saying that the Jewish people had “no greater inspiration” than from the Bible.

“We have no deeper roots than those in the Bible, and we have no purpose or hope without the foundational values of the Bible,” said Gallant.

“The people of the book is first and foremost the people of the book of books – a nation that is being formed and strengthened from between the pages of the Bible, a nation that has established an identity upon the yoke of Torah, a nation whose highs and lows are also well reflected in Bible stories. Precisely because of this, a day of contentment is upon us.”

Mike Pence has pacemaker implanted

Former US Vice President expected to fully recover after undergoing surgery to have a pacemaker implanted.

Former US Vice President Mike Pence underwent surgery to have a pacemaker implanted after experiencing “symptoms associated with a slow heart rate,” his office said Thursday, according to NBC News.

The “routine surgery” was successfully performed Wednesday, according to the statement from Pence’s office.

The statement added that the 61-year-old former Vice President is “expected to fully recover and return to normal activity in the coming days.”

The statement noted that Pence’s medical history included a diagnosis of asymptomatic left bundle branch block. He felt symptoms over the past two weeks and consulted with his doctors before undergoing the procedure at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in Falls Church, Virginia, the statement said.

“I am grateful for the swift professionalism and care of the outstanding doctors, nurses and staff at Inova Heart and Vascular Institute, including Dr. Brett Atwater and Dr. Behnam Tehrani,” Pence said in the statement.

“I also appreciate the consultation of my longtime Indiana physicians, Dr. Michael Busk and Dr. Charles Taliercio at Ascension St. Vincent. My family has been truly blessed by the work of these dedicated healthcare professionals,” he added.

NBC News noted that Pence is widely rumored to be laying the groundwork for a potential presidential run in 2024. The report also noted that a candidate’s health and medical history can often factor significantly into a political campaign.

Twitter accused of protecting CNN after it bans James O’Keefe: ‘They’re all on the same team’

0

Project Veritas founder has vowed to file defamation suit against
Twitter next week.

Critics accused Twitter Thursday of banning Project Veritas founder James O’Keefe from its platform over the right-wing guerrilla news outlet’s damning exposé of CNN.

Project Veritas relaunched its #ExposeCNN campaign this week by sharing footage of CNN technical director Charles Chester revealing the liberal network’s dirty laundry.

In the footage, Chester admitted that CNN’s “focus” during the 2020 election campaign
was to “get rid of” President Trump, that the network hyped its coronavirus coverage for “gangbuster” ratings, and that it aims to “help” Black Lives Matter.

On Thursday, O’Keefe’s Twitter account, which was sharing Project Veritas’ reporting, was permanently suspended over alleged use of “fake accounts.”

“As outlined in our policy on platform manipulation and spam, ‘You can’t mislead others on Twitter by operating fake accounts,’ and ‘you can’t artificially amplify or disrupt conversations through the use of multiple accounts,'” a Twitter spokesperson told Fox News.

O’Keefe categorically denied Twitter’s assertions, telling Fox News that he vows to sue the tech giant for defamation.

Twitter declined to comment when asked what fake accounts O’Keefe allegedly used. The company also did not respond to requests for comment on O’Keefe’s pending lawsuit.

Critics, however, were not buying Twitter’s “fake accounts” accusation.

“In case you haven’t figured out how it works by now… @CNN spreads propaganda to elect Democrats[.] And then @Twitter runs interference to protect CNN. They’re all on the same team,” tweeted Donald Trump Jr., who later added, “At this point, both @CNN and @Twitter should have to register with the FEC as Democrat Super PACs.”

“O’Keefe exposes CNN for lying about me and Donald Trump for propaganda. Then Twitter suspends him,” said Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., alluding to comments the CNN staffer made about the network hyping the congressman’s scandals as “propaganda.”

“Have to wonder what threats CNN made to Twitter to achieve this,” New York Post reporter Jon Levine quipped.

“Twitter banned Carpe Donktum right after his viral parody of CNN with the babies and they banned James O’Keefe after he released videos of a CNN employee that embarrassed the company,” wrote Daily Caller social media associate Greg Price, recalling Twitter’s suspension of the pro-Trump meme creator.

“After the latest round of hidden camera videos embarrassing to CNN were released, @JamesOKeefeIII has been permanently banned from Twitter. The @Project_Veritas account was also recently banned. This is how big tech works with liberal corporate media to take down challengers,” journalist Andy Ngo wrote.

“Twitter has just suspended @JamesOKeefeIII. He violated no policy. But his reporting exposed @CNN bias, and their friends at Twitter apparently couldn’t stand for that. What happened to giving “everyone the power to create and share ideas and information instantly,’ @jack?” Live Action president Lila Rose called out Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.

Former CNN contributor Steve Cortes also asked: “Twitter intervenes to protect CNN?” in response to the news.

Twitter has also been the subject of recent Project Veritas exposés. In January, the outlet obtained and published internal remarks by top executives, including CEO Jack Dorsey, following the permanent suspension of then-President Donald Trump.

Twitter previously suspended Project Veritas’ account back in February for alleged violation of its policy against sharing private information.
