ZOA Condemns U.N.’s Falk Accusing Israel of Genocide

0

The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) has condemned Richard Falk, the Special Rapporteur on the Palestinian Territories of the United Nations Human Rights Council, who said regarding Israel’s conduct towards the  Palestinian Arabs in a Russia Today interview that “when you target an ethnic group and inflict this kind of punishment, you are in effect nurturing a kind of criminal intention that is genocidal.” Falk made this statement when answering a question over a 2007 statement he had made that Israel and its allies were “slouching toward a Palestinian Holocaust.” The ZOA has called for the U.S. to call upon the U.N. to fire Falk from his post.

Falk’s vicious statement impelled the Canadian Foreign Minister, John Baird, to say that Canada “completely rejects and condemns” Falk’s “appalling” remarks and to call for Falk’s immediate removal from his UN post. Canada has previously called for Falk to be fired “for his numerous outrageous and anti-Semitic statements,” Baird said, “and these [latest] comments underscore once more the complete and total absurdity of his service as a UN Special Rapporteur” (‘Canada wants UN official ousted over ‘Palestinian holocaust’ comment,’ Times of Israel, December 20, 2013).

Following the Canadian condemnation, the U.S. State Department Spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, “We condemn and completely reject Richard Falk’s latest outrageous statements made during an interview with Russia Today. The Administration has repeatedly condemned in the strongest terms his despicable and deeply offensive comments, particularly his anti-Semitic blog postings, his endorsement of 9/11 conspiracy theories, and more recently, his deplorable statements with regard to the terrorist attacks in Boston. His most recent remarks, however, represent a new low. We do not support his mandate or his work, which has been one-sided and biased, nor do we believe he should continue to serve as independent UN rapporteur, and we reiterate our calls for him to step down from this role” (Jen Psaki, Spokesperson, State Department, Daily Press Briefing, Washington, DC, December 20, 2013). The U.S. did not, however, did not repeat or endorse Canada’s call for Falk to be fired.

Falk’s disturbing record includes:

  •  In an April 2013 blog post, Falk blamed the Boston marathon terrorist bombings on American imperialism (“the American global project”) and the Obama Administration’s alleged “disappointing” failure to be tough on Israel.
  • In October 2012, Falk called for boycotting private Israeli companies, a call criticized by U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, as “irresponsible and unacceptable.”
  • In March 2011, Falk claimed before the U.N. Human Rights Council that Israeli Jews moving into homes in eastern Jerusalem and Palestinians being allegedly expelled from their homes by courts after challenges to their property ownership was a situation that “can only be described in its cumulative impact as a form of ethnic cleansing.”
  • In January 2011, Falk wrote a blog in which he reiterated previous claims he had made regarding the 9/11 attacks having been an inside job by the U.S. government.
  • In August 2010, Falk, in a UN report, accused Israel of a policy of apartheid.
  • In January 2008, Falk issued a statement in his UN capacity, stating of Israel’s legal blockade of Gaza to prevent the importation of weapons and military materiel into the Hamas-run territory that “Israel maintains its Gaza siege in its full fury, allowing only barely enough food and fuel to enter to stave off mass famine and disease.” Falk then called for implementing the ‘responsibility to protect’ doctrine that mandates military intervention on behalf of a civilian population facing collective punishment and war crimes and for a determination of “whether the Israeli civilian leaders and military commanders responsible for the Gaza siege should be indicted and prosecuted for violations of international criminal law.”
  • In April 2004  op-ed in The Nation, Falk described Israel’s 2002 intervention in the PA controlled territories following an exponential rise in lethal Palestinian suicide terrorism within Israel as “state-sponsored terrorism.”

ZOA National President Morton A. Klein said, “Richard Falk is a veteran Israel-basher and conspiracy theorist who believes, among other things, that 9/11 was an inside job by the Americans. He has excused terrorist acts within the U.S. if they were committed on behalf of causes he approved, like supporting communist North Vietnam. He has participated in a previous UN fact-finding mission which claimed that suicide bombing is a valid form of warfare that can be used against Israel. Such a man is beyond the pale and while that may explain why the UN has made repeated use of him, it indicates why his testimony must be condemned

“Nothing better exemplifies the perversion of legal norms in favor of indicting Israel than Falk’s claim that Israeli Jews merely moving into houses in close proximity to Arabs, or Jews claiming property found in law courts to be their property, represents ethnic cleansing.

“This obsessive Israel-basher and supporter of the Palestinian cause of Israel’s elimination has now chosen to accuse Israel of genocide — an obscene cheapening of an important term used to describe the deliberate destruction of a people.

“We are pleased that the Obama Administration appropriately condemned Falk’s latest utterance, but we are disappointed that it did not reiterate and support Canada’a call for the UN Human Rights Council to fire Falk. It should do so without delay. Such a statement would have far more force and exert far more due pressure on the UN than merely saying that Falk should step down.”

Ditmas Kitchen and Cocktails: New Kosher Restaurant in LA!

3

Ditmas Kitchen and Cocktails, the new American eatery from chef Alex Reznik (La Seine, Cafe Wa s), sports two identities. On one hand it’s a restaurant dressed as a lounge with a rustic-style 20-foot communal table and some bar seatage, and on the other hand it’s a white tablecloth joint with oversized round booths and assorted bare lightbulbs. But through and through Ditmas is a place inspired by Reznik’s Brooklyn childhood, his mother and grandmother’s cooking, and the Avenue on which he grew up, Ditmas.

Jewish Man Held by al-Qaeda Pleads for Help!

A 72-year-old American development worker who was kidnapped in Pakistan by al-Qaida more than two years ago appealed to President Obama in a video released Thursday to negotiate his release, saying he feels “totally abandoned and forgotten.”

The video of Warren Weinstein was the first since two videos released in September 2012. Weinstein, the country director in Pakistan for J.E. Austin Associates, a U.S.-based firm that advises a range of Pakistani business and government sectors, was abducted from his house in the eastern city of Lahore in August 2011.

In the video sent Thursday to reporters in Pakistan including The Associated Press, Weinstein called on the U.S. government to negotiate his release.

“Nine years ago I came to Pakistan to help my government, and I did so at a time when most Americans would not come here, and now when I need my government it seems that I have been totally abandoned and forgotten,” Weinstein said during the 13-minute video. “And so I again appeal to you to instruct your appropriate officials to negotiate my release.”

It was impossible to tell how much Weinstein’s statement, made under the duress of captivity, was scripted by his captors.

The video and an accompanying letter purported to be from Weinstein was emailed anonymously to reporters in Pakistan. The video was labelled “As-Sahab,” which is al-Qaida’s media wing, but its authenticity could not be independently verified. The letter was dated Oct. 3, 2013 and in the video Weinstein said he had been in captivity for two years.

In the video, Weinstein wore a grey track suit jacket and what appeared to be a black knit hat on his head. His face was partially covered with a beard.

Al-Qaida has said Weinstein would be released if the U.S. halted airstrikes in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen and also demanded the release of all al-Qaida and Taliban suspects around the world.

The White House has called for Weinstein’s immediate release but has said it won’t negotiate with al-Qaida.

The videos last year showed Weinstein appealing for help from the Jewish community and Israel’s prime minister.

‘I am not a hero’, says bus driver who saved his passengers from bomb

0

Michael Yagur ordered the dozen people on bus no. 240 to safety moments before bomb hidden in knapsack was detonated by sappers

According to reports by ynetnews Michael Yagur prevented what could have been a terrible tragedy.

A bomb planted on board bus no. 240 as it made its way from Bat Yam to Bnei Brak was spotted by an alert passenger, and, thanks to Yagur, the 12 people on board were quickly sent to safety.

“One of the passengers told me there was a bag on the bus. I asked who it belonged to but no one claimed it,” Yagur recalled. “I ordered the passengers off at the next stop and about 10 minutes later the bus exploded.”

But, Yagur told Ynet, “I am not a hero.”

The bag holding the bomb was big and black, Yagur said, with zippers at the top and the bottom. It had been placed on a seat behind the rear door.

President Shimon Peres later phoned and thanked the bus driver and the passenger who discovered the explosive, saying their actions saved lives.

“The nation owes you a debt of gratitude and I would like to personally congratulate you for this act of bravery,” Peres told bus driver Michael Yagur.

Yagur “displayed outstanding resourcefulness” in a situation where the timing was key, said Eitan Fiksman, a spokesman for Dan Bus Company, which runs the route. Yagur was the last off the bus and the bomb detonated immediately after he disembarked, Fiksman added.

The police say the foiled attack had a nationalistic motive.

Washington – Last-minute Insurance Shoppers Given Grace Period

0

Anticipating heavy traffic on the government’s health care website, the Obama administration effectively extended Monday’s deadline for signing up for insurance by a day, giving people in 36 states more time to select a plan.

The grace period — which runs through Tuesday — was the latest in a series of pushed-back deadlines and delays that have marked the troubled rollout of the health care law

But federal officials urged buyers not to procrastinate.

“You should not wait until tomorrow. If you are aiming to get coverage Jan. 1, you should try to sign up today,” said Julie Bataille, a spokeswoman for the federal agency overseeing the overhaul.

Bataille said the grace period was being offered to accommodate people from different time zones and to deal with any technical problems that might result from a last-minute rush of applicants.

Monday had been the deadline for Americans in the 36 states served by the federal HealthCare.gov website to sign up if they wanted coverage upon the start of the new year. Some other states have also extended enrollment deadlines slightly.

The HealthCare.gov site had a disastrous, glitch-prone debut in October, but the government reported on Twitter that it was running smoothly Monday morning.

As the Monday deadline drew new, last-minute health insurance shoppers called help lines and attended enrollment events. More than 1 million people visited the refurbished website over the weekend, and a federal call center received more than 200,000 calls.

The original sign-up deadline already had been pushed back a week because of the technical problems that plagued the federal marketplace for weeks, but hundreds of upgrades to storage capacity and software have cut error rates and wait times.

“It’s just nonstop now. Everybody knows about it. Everybody wants it,” said Florida enrollment counselor Madeleine Siegal. She said her organization in Fort Lauderdale was slammed with walk-ins and appointments Friday, had several weekend enrollment events and opened its doors an hour early on Monday.

Ronald Bellingeri, a 59-year-old general contractor in Florida, signed up Friday in 90 minutes with help from an enrollment counselor. Bellingeri said he waited until the last minute because he didn’t know what to do or where to go.

On Friday, he chose a gold plan with a $156 monthly premium. The government is picking up $472 per month because of his income.

“I just walk in the door and an hour and a half later, I have health insurance. It makes me feel great,” he said.

Roger Colyn, 60, of Des Moines, was happy when he left his Monday morning appointment with an Iowa enrollment navigator. She helped him sign up for a silver-level health insurance plan, that will cost him $10.79 in monthly premiums after tax credits and government aid are factored in.

“I feel relieved,” said Colyn, who had previously tried to sign up at a local hospital, but had run into problems when he was told the cost would be more than he could afford. He started the process over Monday and was told he would have coverage starting Jan. 1.

Others said they will let the date pass without making a decision.

“I’m in no hurry, though it’d be nice to be able to visit a doctor without stress,” said Kyle Eichenberger, an uninsured 34-year-old from Oak Park, Ill.

Eichenberger said he hit a wall on the website when he first tried to enroll. More recently, the 34-year-old stay-at-home dad hasn’t had time to get his questions answered. His family situation doesn’t fit into a neat category: His children and their mother have health insurance through her job. But her employer doesn’t offer coverage to opposite-sex domestic partners, and the couple are not married.

“I’m an Obamacare supporter, though I think it is full of problems,” Eichenberger said. “It’s better than the system we had before and already helps my kids get free preventive care. I’d like to see the whole system streamlined to be more user-friendly. Keep the basic idea, but don’t make me feel like I’m navigating a maze to get a simple checkup.”

Minnesota, one of the states running their own insurance exchanges, had long planned a Monday deadline to sign up for coverage starting Jan. 1. But amid problems with its website and extra-long hold times to reach its help center, the state last week postponed the deadline by eight days, letting people sign up through Dec. 31.

Maryland has also extended its deadline, to Dec. 27.

In Washington state, people who got up early on Monday to start their application for health insurance on the state’s online marketplace may have been disappointed. The site was down for maintenance until nearly 9 a.m.

ETTA’s 20th Annual Gala Huge Success Supporting Jews with Special Needs; ETTA Announces “200 by 2020” Plan & Opening of Fifth Home

0

Beverly Hills, CA – ETTA’s 20th Annual Gala, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Tuesday December 17, drew over 400 members of the Los Angeles community to support ETTA’s work on behalf of Jewish adults with special needs.

ETTA, which merged with OHEL Children’s and Family Services last year, is the premier resource for residential services for Jewish individuals with disabilities on the West Coast, and also provides many other services to support people with special needs: life skills training, job coaching, social events, a day program, a summer program, and educational programs. The vision of ETTA is an inclusive, participatory community of people with and without special needs, succeeding and growing together.

This year’s banquet was particularly meaningful as it marked ETTA’s 20th Anniversary. ETTA was founded in 1993 as the realization of retired LAUSD special education teacher Mrs. Etta Israel’s dream. Her modest estate was dedicated to founding ETTA, which in the past 20 years has become a beacon of hope for people with disabilities and the families who love them.

ETTA’s work was celebrated and appreciated by all at the Gala, including the ETTA-OHEL Board and ETTA Advisory Board. Many OHEL board members and executive staff were there as well, as were many elected officials, including State Controller John Chiang, Vice Chair of the California Democratic Party Eric Bauman, Assemblymember Richard Bloom, District 50, and Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian, District 46, who were welcomed by attorney Sam Yebri, Chair of ETTA’s Government Relations Group.

An incredible program, emceed by comedian Mark Schiff, featured the many different aspects of ETTA.

ETTA’s Executive Director, Dr. Michael Held, explained the organization’s current focus: a plan called “200 by 2020” authored together with ETTA’s Visionary Award recipient Michael Baruch. Due to tremendous need, ETTA’s goal is to house, or support in various housing arrangements, 200 individuals with disabilities by the year 2020. Towards that end, Dr. Held was proud to announce the opening of ETTA’s 5th home – and first on the Westside – called Bedford House. This house is not a group home but rather a privately-run home for high-functioning women who still need some support.

Liebe and Ivor Geft were the evening’s recipients of the ETTA Champions Award. Liebe Geft is the Director of the Museum of Tolerance, which is the educational arm of the Simon Wiesenthal Center. Ivor is a renowned cardiologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and teaches many Torah classes in the Los Angeles area. “What is so meaningful about supporting ETTA,” noted Liebe Geft, “is that it enables and ennobles these individuals with special needs to give to others, which is our purpose in life.”

Michelle Wolf, co-founder of HaMercaz and currently Transitions Project Coordinator for Bet Tzedek Legal Services, received the Professional Leadership Award for her 25 years of advocacy and innovation in the field, both for her own son Danny and for countless others. Michelle was thrilled – and moved – by a surprise appearance and introduction from her daughter Rachel, whom ETTA flew out from New York.

One highlight of the evening was a speech from Moshe Bienenfeld, a young man with autism who was honored with ETTA’s Lazare, z”l, and Moselle Hendeles Young Leadership Award. Moshe reminded everyone that those with challenges are not “disabled” but rather “differently abled,” and shared his pride in being a spokesperson for individuals with autism.

The evening wrapped up with Michael Baruch, founder of Baruch Enterprises, receiving ETTA’s Visionary Award for his tireless work on behalf of the organization. “What could be more important than giving a home to people who need a home?” Baruch asked the audience. “You all can help our vision to provide homes to all the people who are in need.”

ETTA, founded in 1993 in Los Angeles, California, serves people with developmental disabilities and their families, and is one of the premier providers of such services on the West Coast. ETTA’s mission is to help people with developmental disabilities, and the families who love them, to live fully enriched and active lives as members of the Los Angeles Jewish community.
