Passenger jet lands safely in LA after bird strikes engine

0

LOS ANGELES (AP) — An Allegiant airliner returned safely to Los Angeles International Airport after the crew reported striking a bird Thursday morning, authorities said.

Allegiant Air Flight 314, an Airbus A319 that was headed to Utah, landed without incident at 7:44 a.m., said Ian Gregor, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman.

The jet experienced a bird strike to its No. 2 engine shortly after takeoff and returned to the airport for an inspection and an assessment, Allegiant spokeswoman Hilarie Grey said in an email.

“The aircraft landed safely and taxied to the gate under its own power, where passengers deplaned normally,” she said.

Grey said she did not immediately have further information about damage to the aircraft.

A replacement jet was dispatched to take the passengers to Provo, Utah.

The hazards of aircraft bird strikes were demonstrated by the emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River in 2009 after geese were ingested in both engines.

Since then, according to an FAA fact sheet, bird strike reporting increased to an average of more than 15,000 a year from 2015 through 2019. Less than 5% of strikes are damaging.

Rabbi says vandals threw bricks at 2 cars outside Hollywood home

0

HOLLYWOOD, FLA. (WSVN) – A South Florida rabbi became the victim of a smash and dash after, he said, vandals threw bricks at two of his vehicles.

Rabbi Avraham Barash said the incident was the most upsetting start to the Sabbath since he moved into his Hollywood home in 2005.

“Quite a while. Never seen anything like this,” he said. “We were shocked to see that all the windows were smashed from the two cars that were parked in front of our house.

Barash said the person or people responsible took aim outside his residence along Hill Drive, sometime Friday night.

“They threw bricks, over 10 bricks were thrown at the car, damaging the cars and windows,” he said. “My children were scared coming out of the house to see something like this.”

Barash said the family’s surveillance cameras weren’t working, so they have no idea who was responsible.

Jerusalem, 5 May, 2021 (TPS) — The first cargo plane with tons of medical equipment donated by Israel to the Government of India landed at Indira Airport in India on Wednesday morning.

In the coming days, more planes are expected to leave Israel for Delhi with thousands of oxygen generators, respirators and medicines for the benefit of the citizens of India who are contending with an unprecedented wave of Coronavirus (COVID-19) infections.

The equipment will mainly go to Delhi’s state hospital and includes thousands of group and individual oxygen generators, respirators, medications, and additional medical equipment.

“The State and people of Israel stand with, and embrace the people of India, our close and important friend,” Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi stated.

India reported 382,691 new cases on Tuesday, a global record. The country recorded over 20,665,000 cases and 226,000 deaths.

The Indian variant has two mutations that may make it more infectious or less affected by vaccines.

Jared Kushner launches Israeli-Arab peace institute

0

A statement from the organization hinted that part of its mission was
to encourage more countries to sign deals with Israel.

Jared Kushner is launching an organization aimed at deepening Israel’s ties with the Arab world and promoting peace in the region.

The Abraham Accords Institute, named after the September 2020 normalization agreements signed between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain, will work to strengthen tourism and trade ties.

Sudan and Morocco, which also recently signed peace agreements with Israel, will be included in the institute’s focus.

A statement from the organization hinted that part of its mission was to encourage more countries to sign deals with Israel.

The organization said it will work to “provide analysis of the benefits of normalization and the potential benefits additional Arab countries can receive if they join the Abraham Accords.”

Kushner, the scion of a New York real estate dynasty, was one of the central architects of the accords during his time serving as an advisor to his father-in-law, former president Donald Trump.

His close friend Avi Berkowitz, who served as Special Envoy to the Middle East and was deeply involved in negotiations for the agreement, will serve on the organization’s board.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, Emirati Ambassador to the U.S. Yousef Al Otaiba, and Bahraini Ambassador to the U.S. Abdulla R. Al-Khalifa are also set to join the board.

Israeli-American billionaire and major Democratic party donor Haim Saban will also play a central role in keeping with the organization’s statement that they are a nonpartisan institute.

“The energy and enthusiasm for the Accords across the region is truly remarkable,” the Abraham Accords Institute for Peace said in a statement.

“In less than a year, this warm peace is melting decades of misunderstanding and hostility across the region. This is a peace among peoples as much as it is among nations. This will be the institute’s focus – to nurture and deepen these human connections.”

Israeli scientists discover fully regenerating marine animal

0

“Here we found a chordate that can regenerate all of its organs even
if it is split into three pieces.”

Researchers from Tel Aviv University have discovered a species of ascidian, a marine animal commonly found in the Gulf of Eilat, capable of regenerating all of its organs – even if it is dissected into three fragments.

The study was led by Prof. Noa Shenkar, Prof. Dorothee Huchon-Pupko, and Tal Gordon of Tel Aviv University’s School of Zoology at the George S. Wise Faculty of Life Sciences and the Steinhardt Museum of Natural History.

The findings of this surprising discovery were published in the leading journal “Frontiers in Cell” and “Developmental Biology.”

“It is an astounding discovery, as this is an animal that belongs to the Phylum Chordata – animals with a dorsal cord – which also includes us humans,” explains Prof. Noa Shenkar.

“The ability to regenerate organs is common in the animal kingdom, and even among chordates you can find animals that regenerate organs, like the gecko who is able to grow a new tail. But not entire body systems.”

“Here we found a chordate that can regenerate  all  of its organs even if it is separated into three pieces, with each piece knowing exactly how to regain functioning of all its missing body systems within a short period of time.”

There are hundreds of species of ascidians, and they are found in all of the world’s oceans and seas. Anyone who has ever opened his or her eyes underwater has seen ascidians without knowing it, as they often camouflage themselves as lumps on rocks and are therefore difficult to discern.

The animal that is the subject of this new study is an ascidian from the species Polycarpa mytiligera (see attached photo), which is very common in the coral reefs of Eilat.

“By all accounts, the ascidian is a simple organism, with two openings in its body: an entry and an exit,” says Tal Gordon, whose doctoral dissertation included this new research.

“Inside the body there is a central organ that resembles a pasta strainer. The ascidian sucks in water through the body’s entry point, the strainer filters the food particles that remain in the body, and the clean water exits through the exit point. Among invertebrates, they are considered to be the closest to humans from an evolutionary point of view.”

Ascidians are famous for their regenerative ability, but until now, these abilities have been identified mainly in asexual reproduction. Never before has such a high regenerative capacity been detected in a chordate animal that reproduces only by sexual reproduction.

“There are species of ascidians that perform simple regeneration in order to reproduce,” Gordon says. “These are species with a colonial lifestyle, with many identical individuals connected to one another. They replicate themselves in order to grow. In contrast, the ascidian from Eilat, Polycarpa mytiligera, is an organism with a solitary lifestyle, without the capacity for asexual reproduction, similar to humans.

“In previous studies, we showed that this species is able to regenerate its digestive system and its points of entrance and exit within a few days. But then we wanted to see if it is capable of renewing all of its body systems.

“We took a few individual ascidians from Eilat and dissected them into two parts, which were able to replenish the removed sections without any problem.”

“In a subsequent experiment, we dissected several dozen ascidians into three fragments, leaving a part of the body without a nerve center, heart, and part of the digestive system. And contrary to our expectations, not only did each part survive the dissection on its own; all of the organs were regenerated in each of the three sections.

“Instead of one ascidian, there were now three. This is very astonishing. Never before has such regenerative capacity been discovered among a solitary species that reproduces sexually, anywhere in the world.”

Prof. Shenkar concludes: “Since the dawn of humanity, humans have been fascinated by the ability to regenerate damaged or missing organs. Regeneration is a wonderful ability that we have, to a very limited extent, and we would like to understand how it works in order to try and apply it within our own bodies.

“Anyone snorkeling in the Gulf of Eilat can find this intriguing ascidian, who may be able to help us comprehend processes of tissue renewal that can help the human race.”

Bennett calls for national emergency unity government

0

“We made a final attempt to leave an opening for a right-wing government, but Netanyahu slammed the door on us,” Bennett said.

Yemina party leader Naftali Bennett on Wednesday called for an emergency government of national unity, asking all right-wing parties to join a coalition in order to avoid a fifth Israeli national election in just over two years.

“We made a final attempt to leave an opening for a right-wing government, but Netanyahu slammed the door on us,” Bennett said in a speech broadcast from the Knesset, Israel’s parliament.

“There are two options: to be dragged to a fifth, sixth and seventh election that will simply destroy the country, or to establish a broad emergency government, although it would be challenging, but one that will be able to get the wagon unstuck from the mud,” he said.

Bennett called on other right-wing parties to stop and think of a new path, saying whoever “cynically takes the State of Israel to a fifth elections on the basis of personal interests, in complete opposition to the needs of the people and state, the people won’t forgive him. This is the time to establish a unity government.”

“Don’t complain about the reality – make the reality,” Bennett said. “Have courage. The door is open to all parties for the need of creating a government.”

“Whoever does not join a unity government hurts unity,” he warned, but admitted that the efforts might not succeed and such a government was not natural for the parties that normally consider themselves adversaries.

“There have been differences of opinion throughout the entire history of the State of Israel, and Israel knew how to get out of it,” Bennett said.

Bennett previously served in coalition governments under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but chose to sit in opposition last year when Netanyahu convinced Blue and White leader Benny Gantz, who replaced Bennett as defense minister, to join a unity government.

“Bennett is all in. He’s finally ditched Netanyahu. That’s the bottom line of his statement,” tweeted Haaretz political analyst Anshel Pfeffer.

Earlier Wednesday, parties representing 56 Knesset members told President Reuven Rivlin that they support center-left Yesh Atid Party leader Yair Lapid to try to form a government. Lapid has already offered that he and Bennett would rotate as prime minister, with Bennett taking first turn during the coalition government’s first year in office.

“Lapid is about to get the mandate from Rivlin, but Bennett is the one giving the statement ‘we will form the government,’” tweeted Pfeffer.

“If this government does come in to being, that will be the form. Lapid will be the one with the real power but he’ll let Bennett do most of the talking.”

Canadian court quashes ruling on labelling of ‘settlement’ products

0

Canada’s Federal Court of Appeal quashes lower ruling that barred Judea and Samaria products from being labelled “Product of Israel”.

Canada’s Federal Court of Appeal has quashed a lower ruling that had barred products from Judea and Samaria from being labelled “Product of Israel”, according to a statement released on Wednesday by B’nai Brith Canada.

In 2019, a Canadian court ruled that it was “false, misleading and deceptive” to label wines made in Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria as a “Product of Israel.”

Canada’s Federal Court had been asked to rule in the case of David Kattenburg, the child of Holocaust survivors who disagreed with a decision by the Canadian government’s Food Inspection Agency to allow the labels.

Kattenburg, who criticized Israel’s policies, argued that such labeling “facilitates Israel’s de facto annexation of large portions of the West Bank,” according to the court ruling.

In July of 2020, the Federal Court had ruled that it was “false, misleading or deceptive” for wines produced by Israeli winemakers located in Judea of Samaria to be labelled “Product of Israel.”

Parts of the decision had also lent support to boycotts of Jewish communities, suggesting that the “Product of Israel” obstructed consumers’ right to boycott these communities.

On Thursday, the Honorable Marc Noël, Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Appeal, reversed course, ruling that the judge below had gone too far in her decision, and that the federal agency that initially reviewed the labels should be allowed to try again, with all options remaining open.

“To be clear, the Agency is not bound by the Federal Court judge’s reasons,” he wrote, according to B’nai Brith Canada.

Technically speaking, the Government’s appeal from the prior ruling was dismissed, as the procedural outcome of remitting the issue to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) remains in place.

In practice, the latest ruling is a major setback for the anti-Israel movement in Canada.

“We welcome the Court of Appeal’s decision today, which puts this matter back on track to being resolved fairly and correctly,” said Michael Mostyn, Chief Executive Officer of B’nai Brith Canada. “B’nai Brith has engaged with decision-makers on this issue since the very beginning, and will continue to do so as this matter progresses.”

“We say proudly that Jews returning to producing wine in their indigenous homeland is something to be celebrated, not stigmatized,” he added.

Commenting on the judge’s ruling, Shimon Koffler Fogel, President and CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), said on Wednesday, “We are not surprised that the Federal Court of Appeal disagreed with the lower court decision and sent the case back to Complaints and Appeals Office (CAO) of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.”

“In the ruling, the Court clearly stated that the CFIA is ‘not bound by the Federal Court judge’s reasons’ and that the Federal Court Judge ‘should not have embarked on the Agency’s Task’ of interpreting the legislation that the CFIA is called upon to apply.”

“We will continue to follow the case and make our own submission to the CAO as it goes through the process of reconsideration and redetermination. CIJA believes that current labelling practices are fully consistent with the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement, as well as Canadian and international law,” he added.

“We know this case is part of a broader campaign to boycott Israel and Israeli goods. Until there is a final status agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, wines produced under the authority and regulatory framework of Israel should be labelled accordingly.”

The initial ruling banning the “Product of Israel” labelling was welcomed by Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

Ashrawi claimed the ruling was “an affirmation of the supremacy of the law and Canada’s obligation to respect international law, which considers settlements illegal and does not recognize them as part of Israel.”

President Rivlin has entrusted MK Yair Lapid with forming a government

0

President of Israel Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin this evening, Wednesday 5 May 2021 / 23 Iyyar 5781, entrusted MK Yair Lapid with forming a government.

President Rivlin’s remarks in full:

“Yesterday, prime minister MK Benjamin Netanyahu informed me that he had been unable to form a government, and that accordingly he was returning the mandate to me. Having received the positions of all the parties, and spoken to MK Yair Lapid and MK Naftali Bennett, I understood that MK Naftali Bennett remains with seven recommendations, while MK Yair Lapid gained 11 recommendations so that he has 56 recommendations.

MK Mansour Abbas wrote that he would ‘cooperate positively with anyone who is entrusted with forming a government, that is to say the person that receives the most number of recommendations.’ MK Naftali Bennet expressed his wish for a stable government that will serve the Israeli people and clarified that he does not rule out the possibility of forming a government with MK Yair Lapid.

The main consideration that Israeli presidents must weigh when arriving at the decision who to entrust with forming a government is who has the best chance of forming a government that will have the confidence of the new Knesset. From the number of recommendations, it is clear that MK Yair Lapid could form a government that has the confidence of the Knesset, despite there being many difficulties. Given these circumstances, returning the mandate to the Knesset would be a misapplication of the law and could result in a fifth round of elections before all possibilities for forming a government had been exhausted.

On the basis of the recommendations I received from the parties in the Knesset, and according to the authority granted to me under paragraph 7 of Basic Law: The Government 2001, I have just spoken to MK Yair Lapid and informed him that I am entrusting him with forming a government, whether this is a government that he will head at the beginning, or a government headed by someone else first in which he will serve as alternate prime minister.

I told him that this is a position that only a very few people have attained, when they are entrusted with forming a government for Israel, and that I am sure that for him it is a moment that signifies the highest level of importance and national responsibility.

My fellow Israelis, we have been caught in a maze – if not a political crisis – for some time now. But we must not allow these difficulties to undermine our faith that we are on the right path, and that we can continue to build the sovereignty of the Israeli people here. Whatever it takes, we will know how to come out of this stronger, unified, on the highway guided by Israeli society.

Once I was young and now I am old, but I have never seen any crisis that has weakened the spirit of this wonderful people.

Earlier this week, at the Jerusalem Unity Prize ceremony here at Beit HaNasi, Rabbanit Racheli Fraenkel, the mother of Naftali Fraenkel ?”? who was killed together with Gilad Shar and Eyal Yifrah, words that touched my heart and which should be in the mind of our leaders as they work to form a government. ‘We are close to desperate,’ said Racheli, ‘yearning for normal days when we can stand together, without trampling or being trampled. To be close without crushing each other’s identity. To allow room for each one of us to breathe, separately and together. To manage to move forward without being forced to clamber over other people. To experience the sacred and the light of each other, but together.’ She added, “Rabbi Shimon Bar Yohai said: ‘my son, do not expect the footsteps of the Messiah until you see all the colors of the rainbow clearly’. This teaches us that redemption requires all shades of colours.’

Israeli society is stronger, more robust, more united and better than they tell us. We know how to support each other in solidarity. The IDF and our security offices, in hospitals, in charitable organizations, in social initiatives that move the heart, like I saw after the terrible tragedy on Har Meron, and as we have seen all throughout the corona crisis. From this crisis, there is a great opportunity to repair and, perhaps there is no alternative but to repair, to heal, to regrow stronger.

My dear fellow Israelis. Like my predecessors, the former presidents of Israel, I have done everything I can to preserve public confidence, even in tempestuous times. Unlike my predecessors, this is my sixth, and last, time when the decision of who to entrust with forming a government has fallen to me. ‘Forgive my hidden faults. …May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer’. (Psalms 19)

Bless you.”

7-Eleven is coming to Israel

Electra Consumer Products and Fox-Weizel are in talks with the US company on a franchise for operating the convenience store brand.

Convenience store chain 7-Eleven is on its way to Israel.

Fashion group Fox-Weizel Ltd. (TASE: FOX) and Electra Consumer Products, which among other things owns electrical goods chain Mahsanei Hashmal, will bring the US-based chain, which has over 70,000 stores in seventeen countries, to Israel.

The stores are open 24-hours a day, and generate revenue of some $61 billion annually.

Electra Consumer Products, headed by Zvika Shwimmer. reported that it was in talks with 7-Eleven on a memorandum of understanding concerning a franchise for developing and operating convenience stores under the brand in Israel, through a special purpose vehicle.

Listed fashion group Fox is due to join the franchise agreement.

If the plans materialize, Electra Consumer Products and Fox will set up a joint company, owned in equal shares, to run the chain in Israel.

This will be the first time either company has gone into food retailing, which is a challenging and competitive sector, with special challenges in the Israeli market, such as kashrut.

How large is the chain’s potential in Israel? “When 7-Eleven goes into a country, it’s to open no fewer than 100 stores,” industry sources said today. If an agreement does materialize, the chain’s first stores will open in mid-2021 in Tel Aviv.

These will be stores of 50-300 square meters in size, selling classic supermarket products, as well as fresh produce, prepared food, hot beverages, and products under the chain’s own brand.

Unlike the convenience stores that already operate in Israel, such as Yellow, So Good, and Menta, which are mainly at fuel stations, 7-Eleven operates in city centers, at corners of main thoroughfares, at railway stations, office sites, as well as fuel stations. It will thus also compete with the urban formats of the large supermarket chains.

One of the main questions that arises in connection with the company’s advent in Israel is whether the franchise owners will allow it to open on Saturdays, which is when the existing convenience stores make a substantial part of their earnings.

The assessment is that the chain will operate at weekends in residential neighborhoods and city centers, but will close stores in places where it is not worthwhile opening on Saturdays, such as in business districts and at railway stations.

Only recently, Rami Levy, who controls the eponymous supermarket chain, declared that the Saturday opening issue made him forego partnership with Delek in the Menta convenience store chain.

The trend of online groceries purchasing, which has strengthened as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, also favors convenience stores, where people go to make supplementary purchases of odd items to top up what they were unable to get online.

7-Eleven began in the US in 1927, and is credited with inventing the model of continuously open convenience stores.
